The Four Season Sensory Garden is a design initiative focused on enhancing the quality of life for dementia patients through a meticulously planned, year-round therapeutic space. This project integrates symbolic graphic elements with colors and cultures to foster tranquility and emotional healing. The garden comprises diverse zones that offer multi-sensory engagement, enabling participants to connect with nature while engaging in tailored activities that support cognitive function, reduce anxiety, and promote interaction.

Dementia Patients Need Colorful Stimulation for Cognitive Function and Mood

Dementia patients often face challenges such as anxiety, disorientation, and cognitive decline, which can lead to isolation and reduced quality of life. Research has demonstrated the efficacy of sensory stimulation in improving mood and cognitive function. However, current care environments frequently lack tailored sensory experiences to cater to the unique needs of these individuals.

Through in-depth interviews conducted at the 305 West End Avenue Memory Care Facility with dementia patients, staff, and residents, I identified key areas for improvement. These included the need for safe outdoor spaces, tools to enhance orientation, and activities that foster engagement and independence. Desk research further highlighted the potential benefits of garden therapy, as demonstrated by a study from the National Sejong Arboretum, which showed significant reductions in depression (67.51%) and memory decline (34.96%) among participants.

Space Planning

The Four Season Sensory Garden is divided into four distinct zones, each housed in temperature-controlled greenhouses to provide a therapeutic environment year-round. These are designed to stimulate the senses and engage patients in meaningful activities.
The spaces are complemented by interactive programs such as mini gardening, stacking stones, and seasonal activities tailored to participants' cognitive and physical abilities.
